Custom Fragrance Discovery
A custom in-store visit's a personalized fragrance discovery session where we curate 10-15 scents based on your preferences, lifestyle, and what you're searching for. Unlike pre-set consultations or random sampling, custom consultations are meticulously tailored to your stated interests, goals, and taste profile. Before you arrive, we discuss what you're seeking, whether that's a signature scent, professional-appropriate option, special occasion fragrance, or comprehensive wardrobe building. This pre-consultation allows us to curate relevant selections from hundreds of possibilities, ensuring every fragrance you smell has genuine potential rather than wasting time on options unlikely to suit you.

The Custom Experience

It starts before you walk in. When you book a time, we trade a few quick notes about what you are after, whether that is something for everyday, a real signature scent, fresh but not aquatic, or the classic ask, I want to smell expensive but subtle. We also want to know what you wear now and what you have tried and disliked, since a strong no is just as useful as a yes. From there we pull a lineup from the full collection specifically for you, so every fragrance you smell has a genuine shot instead of being filler.
When you arrive, we go through that lineup with scent tubes, reading your reactions as we go and swapping in new directions on the fly. Love the woods but want them softer? We reach for a creamier sandalwood. Everything is unhurried, and you leave with decants of the standouts so the real test happens on your skin over the next week. If you are brand new to this, the free scent flight is a lower key way to warm up first.
What Makes It Custom

The free flight is a fixed set that shows off range, and it is a great introduction. A custom flight is the opposite: it is built entirely around your taste. If you already know sweet scents are not for you, we skip the gourmands and spend the time somewhere useful. If you keep gravitating to woods, we show you the whole spread, from a soft cedar to a creamy sandalwood to a smoky oud, so you can feel where on that scale you actually live.
Because the lineup is tuned to you, more of it lands, and we can go deeper on the two or three that click rather than skimming ten you feel lukewarm about. It also means we can chase a specific goal, like matching a discontinued favorite or finding one scent that carries you from a work meeting to dinner. Browse scent families beforehand if you want to come in already knowing a couple of directions to point us in.

A custom flight can be pointed at whatever you are trying to solve.
Signature scent hunt: The whole session aims at finding the one that feels like you, with the emphasis on versatility and personal resonance over variety. Our signature scent finder guide covers this in depth.
Wardrobe building: Instead of one scent, we look for two or three that cover different moods, a daytime fresh, an evening warm, an easy weekend skin scent.
Occasion or gift: A fragrance for a wedding, a new job, or a present for someone specific, where we work from that person's taste and the setting.
Discontinued replacement: You bring the name or the empty bottle and we chase the closest living match.
There is no wrong theme; telling us the goal up front just means the lineup is sharper. If a gift is the mission, our gift guides are a good starting point too.
Who Should Choose Custom vs. Free Consultation

Not sure which to book? Here is the quick version.
Choose the free flight if you are brand new to fragrance, you are curious about how we work before committing, or you just want a fun, no pressure overview of what is possible. It is free every time the shop is open and takes only a few minutes.
Choose a custom flight if you have a specific goal, a signature scent, an office safe pick, a wardrobe to build, or a discontinued favorite to replace, and you want a lineup pulled just for you with more time to go deep.
Plenty of people do the free flight first and come back for a custom session once they know what they are chasing. Either way you can walk in on weekends from 12 to 5, or book a time for a weekday. Start with the free scent flight if you are on the fence.

Santa Cruz Fragrance Discovery
An in-store visit is a guided fragrance discovery session where you smell a lineup of scents in a calm, structured way. We use scent tubes instead of spraying, so you experience each fragrance on its own without a cloud of mixed scents in the air. That makes it much easier to notice what you actually like and to build a short list of favorites. It works solo or with a couple of friends, and there is never any pressure to buy. Curious first? The [free scent flight](/flights) is the easiest way to start, and it is free every time the shop is open.
Scent Profiling in Santa Cruz
Scent profiling is systematic guided discovery process revealing your fragrance preferences, taste patterns, olfactory inclinations, and ideal fragrance directions through structured testing across fragrance families, notes, styles, and compositions, like having fragrance sommelier decode your taste, teaching you fragrance vocabulary and self-knowledge enabling confident independent navigation of perfume landscape. Most people approach fragrance randomly: trying whatever catches attention, blind-buying based on reviews/hype, accumulating bottles without clear direction, confused about why some work beautifully while others disappoint despite similar descriptions, unable to articulate preferences beyond vague "I like fresh" or "I want something sophisticated." Scent profiling replaces random exploration with systematic understanding: identifying which specific notes/families/styles resonate with you personally (not theoretically), discovering unexpected preferences you didn't know existed (many people surprised by what they actually love vs. what they thought they'd love), recognizing patterns explaining past successes and failures (suddenly understanding why certain purchases worked while others didn't), developing fragrance literacy (learning vocabulary articulating preferences to perfumers/retailers/friends), and creating decision-making framework for future exploration (knowing which new releases likely to appeal, which territories to explore deeper, which to skip entirely).
Signature Scent Finder (Santa Cruz)
Finding a signature scent is about discovering the fragrance that feels like an extension of yourself: the scent people associate with you, that enhances rather than masks your presence. Your signature scent becomes part of your identity, the smell people remember when they think of you, the fragrance that makes you feel most like yourself. It's not about trends, marketing, or what influencers recommend.
