There's a moment that happens pretty regularly at our shop. Someone walks past the Dilo candles, picks one up, takes a sniff, and says some version of "wait - what is this?"
That's the Dilo effect. Their scents don't smell like other candles. They smell like places and moods that most brands don't try to capture - a desert at dusk, a temple somewhere warm, the air after a rainstorm in the Southwest. It's specific, layered, and a little bit surprising.
Dilo is based in Philadelphia and hand-pours everything using 100% U.S.-grown soy wax. They've built out several collections at different price points, which means there's a way in for everyone from the curious newcomer to the person who wants a statement piece on their coffee table.
The Elsewhere Collection
This is Dilo's signature line and the one that turns heads. The Elsewhere candles come in 8.5oz vessels ($32), burn for about 45 hours, and feature the most complex scent profiles in their lineup. They also come in a smaller 4.5oz format ($20) if you want to try before going full-size.
Palo Santo
Black pepper and clove on top, palo santo and lavender in the middle, patchouli, amber, and cedarwood at the base. This is one of the best Dilo palo santo candle interpretations we've smelled - it captures the woody, sacred quality of burning palo santo sticks without the smokiness taking over. The lavender adds a softness that makes it work in any room.
If you're into what palo santo actually smells like and want a candle that does it justice, start here.
Hinoki Sesame
Bergamot and lemon peel open into sea salt, incense smoke, and sesame seeds, settling on hinoki wood, red cedar, and musk. This is the candle that surprises people the most. Sesame seeds in a candle? It works. There's a nutty, meditative quality that feels completely different from anything Western candle brands typically produce.
Desert Kush
Tangelo and Italian bergamot into cannabis flower, cypress, and moss, landing on vetiver, patchouli, and leather. Bold doesn't quite cover it. This candle smells like the desert after a storm - herbal, green, a little wild. It's not for everyone, and that's part of the appeal. If you lean toward earthy and smoky scent profiles, this is your candle.
Cactus Flower
Agave, black pepper, and yuzu open into cactus flower, jade, and moringa over patchouli and redwood. The most delicate of the Elsewhere candles - mysterious, slightly romantic, with a dry spiciness. Great for bedrooms and bathrooms where you want something interesting but not overpowering.
The Amber Glass Collection
If Elsewhere is the bold, creative side of Dilo, the Amber Glass Collection is the accessible one. These are 3.5oz candles at $12 each, burning for 20-25 hours. Small enough to try without commitment, good enough to buy multiples.
The standouts:
No. 04 Sandalwood - Lemon peel, bergamot, and clove lead into hemp and cedar over sandalwood, amber, and vetiver. This is the woody candle we recommend more than any other at this price point. Clean, warm, fills a room.
No. 08 Burning Cedar - Black currant and smoldering ash into incense, tobacco leaf, and clove, settling on red cedar, wood smoke, and amber. Like sitting by a fire in a cabin. This one has a strong throw and is perfect for anyone who loves the smell of a wood-burning fireplace.
No. 03 Tobacco + Cedar - Cinnamon and vanilla with musk lead into tobacco leaf over cedarwood and patchouli. Sophisticated, warm, great for smaller spaces like a bathroom or office.
No. 11 Balsam + Clove - Eucalyptus and clove with pine, cypress, and silver birch over fir balsam and leather. A cold-weather candle that smells like a snowy forest. If you love forest bathing scents, this one will get you there without leaving your couch.
No. 02 Amber + Oakmoss - Amber and blood orange with oakmoss and patchouli over sandalwood and musk. Warm, woodsy, with a citrus kiss. The throw is strong enough that it lingers in a room for days after burning.
At $12 each, these are some of the best values in our entire home fragrance collection.
The SHADES Collection
SHADES is Dilo's premium line - 10oz candles in matte glass vessels with heavy stock, foil-printed packaging ($36). They burn for about 60 hours and feature the same scent profiles as the Amber Glass Collection but with a stronger throw and more refined presentation.
The collection includes Amber + Oakmoss, Basil Mint + Lavender, Coconut + Vetiver, and Tobacco + Cedar. If you tried any of these in the Amber Glass size and wanted more, SHADES is the upgrade.
The matte glass vessels also look great on a shelf after the candle is done. Reusable packaging isn't the main selling point, but it's a nice bonus.
Elsewhere Perfumes
One thing that sets Dilo apart from most home fragrance brands: they make wearable perfumes. The Elsewhere collection includes concentrated perfume oils ($35) in 15ml amber glass bottles with droppers. Alcohol-free, intimate on the skin, and built from the same scent profiles as the candles.
Hinoki Sesame, Cactus Flower, Palo Santo, and Desert Kush are all available as perfumes. If you fall in love with one of these scents in candle form, you can literally wear it. That's a level of brand cohesion most companies don't even attempt.
Beyond Candles
Dilo also makes room sprays ($12), reed diffusers ($24), and incense cones ($20). The room sprays are especially worth noting - numbered to match the Amber Glass candles, they're a fast way to scent a room when you don't want to light something.
The incense cones burn for 15-20 minutes and come in the Elsewhere scents. If you're curious about incense versus candles, Dilo's cones are a good crossover point because the scent profiles are familiar.
Why Dilo Stands Out
In a market full of candle brands that smell pleasant but forgettable, Dilo goes the other direction. Their scent profiles are creative without being gimmicky. Sesame seeds, cannabis flower, cactus flower, smoldering ash - these aren't notes you see on most candle labels. But they work, because the blending is thoughtful and the ingredients are solid.
The price range also deserves credit. You can get into Dilo for $12 with an Amber Glass candle, go mid-range with Elsewhere at $20-$32, or treat yourself with a SHADES candle at $36. That kind of range in a single brand is unusual.
And the quality is consistent across all of it. We've been carrying Dilo for a while now, and the burn performance, throw, and scent complexity hold up batch after batch.
Who It's For
Dilo is the brand for people who've been buying candles for years and want something they haven't smelled before. It's for the person who reads scent notes on a label and gets excited by unexpected combinations. It's also for anyone who wants their home to smell distinctive rather than generic.
If you're newer to home fragrance, the Amber Glass collection at $12 is a zero-risk entry point. If you already know you like bold, complex scents, go straight to Elsewhere.
