Santa Cruz is not the kind of town where you have to settle for whatever's on the shelf at a big-box store. There are real, independent shops here that carry candles worth burning — soy wax, clean ingredients, interesting scents, brands you won't find at the mall. The trick is knowing where to look, because the best spots aren't always the most obvious ones.
Here's a straightforward guide to the candle shops in Santa Cruz that are actually worth your time.
Santa Cruz Scent — 311 Soquel Ave
We're going to mention ourselves first, and we'll be upfront about it. Santa Cruz Scent is a fragrance bar on Soquel Ave, just a block off Pacific, and candles are a big part of what we do.
We carry five candle brands: P.F. Candle Co., Dilo, Broken Top, Candlefy, and Studio Stockhome. That's not a random grab bag — each brand does something different. P.F. Candle Co. makes California-inspired soy candles with strong throws and scents like Golden Coast and Amber & Moss. Dilo's elsewhere collection leans botanical and complex, with options like Cactus Flower and Hinoki Sesame. Broken Top is hand-poured in Bend, Oregon, with approachable scents like Lavender Mint and Coconut Sandalwood. Candlefy does California-themed candles — their Big Sur is a customer favorite. And Studio Stockhome brings Scandinavian-rooted scents like Palo Santo and Santalum.

What makes us different from a typical candle shop is the format. We're by appointment, which means you get actual time and attention when you come in. No crowds, no rushing past a wall of candles trying to sniff twelve things at once. You can book a free scent flight and smell through everything at your own pace — candles, Japanese incense, room sprays, and personal fragrance decants. Most visits take about 15 to 30 minutes.
We're open Monday through Friday 10am to 5pm, and Saturday through Sunday 12pm to 5pm. Walk-ins are welcome when we're not with another appointment, but booking ahead guarantees your spot.
Pacific Avenue Shops
Pacific Ave is the main drag downtown, and it has a few shops that carry candles alongside other goods. These aren't candle-only stores, but they stock solid options.
Gift and Home Stores
Several of the independent gift shops along Pacific Ave carry candles from recognizable brands. You'll find options in the $15 to $35 range, usually alongside greeting cards, journals, jewelry, and other gift items. These shops are great for one-stop gift shopping — grab a candle, a card, and a book from the bookstore next door, and you've handled a birthday without breaking a sweat.
The selection tends to rotate with the seasons, so what's on the shelf in April might be different from what's there in October.
Boutiques and Lifestyle Shops
A few of the clothing and lifestyle boutiques downtown carry candles as part of their home goods section. These tend to lean toward aesthetics-forward brands — beautiful packaging, clean design, the kind of candle that looks as good on a shelf as it smells when lit. Prices are typically higher here, but so is the presentation.
Soquel Ave and the Near-Downtown Stretch
Soquel Ave runs parallel to Pacific, just south of downtown, and it has a different feel. Less foot traffic, more neighborhood energy, and some shops that reward the detour.
Beyond our shop at 311, you'll find a handful of other businesses on this stretch that occasionally carry candles or home fragrance products — plant shops, vintage stores, and small boutiques. The selection varies, but it's worth browsing if you're already in the area.

If you're making a day of it, our walking guide to Soquel Ave covers the coffee, food, and shopping worth hitting on this stretch.
The Westside and Beyond
The Westside has a few shops that carry candles, particularly along Mission Street and in the smaller commercial pockets scattered through the neighborhood. These tend to be general gift shops or wellness-oriented stores that stock candles alongside skincare, supplements, or yoga gear.
You'll also find some options in Capitola and Aptos if you're willing to drive a bit further south. The Capitola Village area has a couple of boutiques with decent candle selections, and the general vibe of the village makes it a pleasant afternoon outing on its own.
Farmers Markets and Pop-Ups
Don't sleep on the farmers markets. Santa Cruz has several weekly markets, and local candle makers regularly set up tables alongside the produce vendors. This is where you'll find truly small-batch, one-person operations — hand-poured candles made in someone's garage or studio in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
The quality varies, but when you find a good one, it's often the most interesting candle you'll buy all year. Plus, you're buying directly from the person who made it, which is hard to beat.
What to Look For in a Good Candle Shop
Not all candle shops are created equal. A few things that separate the good ones from the forgettable:
Soy or coconut wax over paraffin. Most of the independent shops in Santa Cruz lean toward soy wax candles, which burn cleaner and throw scent differently than paraffin. If you're not sure what the difference is, our guide to candle ingredients breaks it down.
Phthalate-free fragrance. This matters more than most people realize. The better shops in town carry brands that skip synthetic shortcuts and use cleaner fragrance oils. Every brand we carry at Santa Cruz Scent is phthalate-free.
Staff who actually know the products. The best shops have people behind the counter who can talk about scent profiles, burn times, and which candle works in which room. If the staff can't tell you anything beyond what's printed on the label, the shop probably isn't specialized enough to help you find what you're actually looking for.

The Bottom Line
Santa Cruz has more good candle options than most towns its size. Between the independent shops on Pacific Ave, the neighborhood spots on Soquel Ave, and the pop-ups at local markets, you can find something worth burning at almost any price point.
If you want to go deep — smell through multiple brands, compare scents side by side, and get real guidance on what works for your space — that's what we built Santa Cruz Scent to do. But honestly, the whole downtown area rewards anyone who's willing to wander into the smaller shops and see what's on the shelf. That's part of what makes this town worth shopping in.
